“Have you ever wondered how old God is?”
—Elizabeth Hawes, a friend
When we were made, curiosity was braided into our being. It invites us into more than what we think we know. Somehow certainty became the goal. Among my regrets in life is asking the question, “If you die tonight, do you know where you would go?” It introduces certainty as a defining characteristic of relationship. It starts from a foundation of fear. God calls to us with love. God draws us to Him. Being wooed and “drawn to” into relationship that expands into trust.
Certainty promotes fear, anger, haughtiness and a fragility in life. It creates narrow spaces that do not have room self. Have you felt beat up by your own certainty? The space in which one can live in certainty is razor thin, filled with fear. Our selves and the world were made from the dust of an expansive eternity.
Curiosity expands us. We reach beyond what we think we know to a living breathing life of faith. A faith that propels us into an understanding that extends beyond what we know. It supports self-awareness that expands who we are and gives permission for others to be more than factory made shapes. Two of my favorite things: questions and contemplation. Questions and contemplation helps us step into new territory that gives ourselves and others more dimensions. Contemplation provides an openness to see more fully and questions help us explore beyond ourselves. Happy pondering and growing!
